“THE FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT”

Cast
Narrator - Pacer Tan
Apple - Allie Chen
Father - Pacer Tan
Bully - Pacer Tan
Teacher - Pacer Tan
Eileen - Eileen

Scene 1 - By the roadside (Apple acting out the narration without dialogue)

Narrator : Sunny aft – and Apple was on her way home. She was happily walking when she saw a mango tree by the roadside. She sees that the tree was beginning to bud flowers.

She remembers – that trees wld bear fruit after it has flowers. She thinks to herself – that if she broke a branch that had flowers, bring back home and plant it, the family could eat mangoes soon!
She was so excited with the idea – that she immediately reached out and broke a branch. Quickly, she scampered home to look for her dad.

Scene 2 - At home (father sitting down reading newspaper)

Apple : Dad! Dad! I’ve got a surprise for you! (with the branch behind her back)
Father : Hey Apple, what have you got?
Apple : We are going to have mangoes soon, dad.
Father : Really? Where are they? Aren’t you going to show me?
Apple : Here it is. All we need to do is to put this in your flower pot and in no time, we will have juicy mangoes. Pretty good plan, huh?
Father : Hmm… Where did you get this branch from?
Apple : I plucked this from the mango tree near school. Why dad?
Father : Well, my girl, I want you to know that it is wrong to take things that don’t belong to you.
Apple : I’m sorry. I did not know (really sorry, sticks out her tongue).
Father : It’s OK girl. I can see that you are truly sorry. Promise you won’t do this again?
Apple : I promise (relieved and nodding). So dad, what should we do with this now? Can we still plant this in your pot and wait for the fruit to grow? Can we, can we, can we?
Father : Erm… This is another thing I’ve got to tell you, Joshua. The branch has to be attached to the tree or it won’t bear fruit.
Apple : (eyes wide-opened, jaw dropped) Are you saying that if the branch is not connected to the tree, there will be no fruit?
Father : You’re absolutely right. In fact, the branch will dry up and die in just a few days.
Apple : (disappointed, hangs his head) I might as well throw this away.
Father : Don’t be so sad, Apple. We can learn an important lesson from this. Why don’t we sit down? (both sit down)
In John Chapt 15, Jesus says He is the vine and we Christians are the branches. If we continue to stay connected to Him and He lives in us, we will bear much fruit because without Him we can do nothing.
Apple : I don’t get it. Jesus wants us to bear fruit? Where is it going to grow from? My head, nose or ears?
Father : (Smile, shaking his head) It is not the kind of fruits we can hold and eat that Jesus is talking about.
Apple : It’s not?
Father : No. He is referring to the fruit of the Holy Spirit. See it this way. Jesus is like the mango tree and we are like the branches. If we continue to stay connected with Him, that means we don’t break away from Him. Before long, we will bear fruit of the Spirit.
Apple : I see. But how do we stay connected with Him?
Father : Well, firstly we must believe that Jesus is our Savior. He saved us from our sins. Next. we shld learn to obey His commands because we love Him. Since we’re not strong all the time to do that. We can ask for His help everyday.

The more we trust Jesus, the more the Holy S will guide us and change us. And help us along the way.

Apple : (looking impressed) I think Jesus is a pretty cool guy.
Father : I think so too.
Apple : Dad, I want to know more about the fruit of the Spirit. Can you tell me more? Do you see any on me, or in me?
Father : Well, there are altogether nine qualities. They are love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self control. Hmm. Actually, there’s a song that we can sing called the Fruit of The Spirit.
(Song : Fruit of The Spirit)

Apple : Wow, I think I have love, dad. You know how much I love you and mom right?
Father : Umm hmm.
Apple : And when I pray, I also pray for my good friend, my classmates, Sparklight, teachers and even our neighbors because God loves them too.
Father : There you go.
Apple : But what about joy & peace? What are they?
Father : Remember this year's June holidays when we had barbeque at Auntie Daisy's house?
Apple : Yup.
Father : Your cousin, Matt – just had a new Xbox / latest games. All of you wanted to play. But when Matt refused to share that with anyone, all your other cousins were so sad. But you did not let that get you down. Instead, I rem you had so much fun just helping to start the barbeque fire and making the popcorns. You had joy! Though you did not get to play the com, you chose to be joyful. I was so proud of you.
Apple : Thanks dad! Yup. I remember that I was a bit disappointed that I did not play the X box. But I decided not to let it ruin my day!
Father : Right! Peace is a quietness of our heart that comes as we learn to trust God and keep our thoughts on Him. Your mom and I are learning this. Every time you come home and make a lot of noise, we try to find peace! haha. just kidding girl.
Apple : (sarcastically) Thanks a lot dad! But I guess you’re right. I can be very naughty. And you’re always so patient with me... Hey! Isn't patience a fruit of the Spirit too?
Father : It sure is. Why don't we continue after you have taken your bath?
Apple : OK
(Apple & father exit while still making small talk)

Narrator : (step up front to the center so that focus would be on him/her while the props are changed behind) Apple learned all about the qualities of the fruit of the Spirit in one afternoon. Hey! Who can remember the first three that Apple and her dad just talked about? Love …. Joy …. Peace.
Great! Now, the next day after school, while Apple was at the bus-stop waiting for her ride, she meets a nasty bully. Let’s just see what Apple will do.

Scene 3 - At the bus-stop (Apple reading her Bible sitting down while Bully stroll in)
Apple : What a beautiful day this is! Praise God!
Bully : Hehehe… Its that Apple girl again. This time must disturb her more. What kind of parents will call their daughter Apple?
(walks over to Apple, cuts her path.)
Apple : Hey! Be careful. Watch where you’re going.
Bully : Woah! So fierce. I very scared.
Apple : You shouldn’t walk like that. Its dangerous.
Bully : I like leh.. What do you have here? A bible? So boring!
Apple : The Bible is not boring at all, John. And I read it because I can find God’s Words in these pages.
Bully : (grab bible) Let me see if God is inside also!
Apple : (decides not to be angry) John, can you please give me back my bible?
Bully : Nope. What are you going to do about it?
Apple : Well, I’m going to pray for you. And I know you’ll return it to me eventually.
Bully : Yeah yeah! Think again, fruity girl. I’m going off now. My bus is here. Haha. Oh no! Where’s my wallet? I must have dropped it during recess.
Apple : Is it in your bag?
Bully : (searches bag) No. How am I gonna go home now?
Apple : Here, I have a spare EZ link card. You can return me in class tomorrow.
Bully : Uh, thanks. (accepts card). Hey, wait a minute! I’m not going to be tricked. You lend me your card so I’ll return you your bible, right?
Apple : No. I just don’t want you to walk all the way home. It may be dangerous, and you may get lost.
Bully : (sob) No one, besides my parents, have been so nice to me before. Why do you treat me so patiently, when I always make fun of you?
Apple : Well, God teaches us to be kind to others. To do good to everyone. And that includes you as well. So I just want to obey God and apply the fruits of the Spirit in my life.
Bully : But don’t you feel impatient with me each time I make trouble for you?
Apple : Well, I do get irritated when you bully me, and sometimes I feel like getting back at you. But I remember that God has been patient with me each time I do wrong. And I know He wants me to have patience with others who do wrong to me as well.
Bully : I don’t think I can ever be like that. If someone treats me the way I did to you, I would probably punch him.
Apple : Well, you shouldn’t. You should learn to forgive.
Bully : I guess you are right. Look, Apple, I am very sorry for poking fun at you. Will you please forgive me?
Apple : Of course.
Bully : Thanks. It sure feels good to be forgiven. Oh, here comes our bus. Shall we?
Apple : Let’s go.

Narrator : (step up front to the center) How exciting? Apple - just won over a bullying classmate. And she did that, by keeping in step with the Holy Spirit. Apple was patient with John, the bully. In fact, she was even kind and good to Bully by lending him the EZ link. Hey! Who can tell me another three qualities of the fruit of the Spirit we just learned? Patience …. Kindness …. Goodness. You guys are really paying attention! Give yourselves a clap.Ok ok.. lets get back to our skit, and see what Apple is up to next.

Final Scene - At Sparklight
Teacher : Good morning, Apple. You are early, as always.
Apple : Good morning teacher Pacer, what can I do to help today?
Teacher : I’m so glad you’re always so helpful, Apple. God will definitely reward your faithfulness in serving Him. You are so dependable. I know I can always count on you.
Why don’t you be an usher today? Sparkler Eileen is also ushering.
Apple : OK! (Eileen enters) Morning Eileen. We are ushers this week!
Eileen : Great. Let’s go get ready.

(Apple and Eileen pretend to usher people. Apple sees 2 Sparklighters that are talking and slowing
walking to their seats)

Apple : (feeling a little annoyed) Come on you two, turtles would move faster than you. Go quickly and find a place to sit..
Eileen : (pulls Apple aside and talks to her calmly) Hey Apple. Don’t you think that was a little too harsh?
Apple : But they were taking their sweet time and I was encouraging them to ... (trying to justify).
Eileen : You could have encouraged more gently and yet remaining firm with them, couldn’t you?
Apple : I guess you are right. (Sigh…) My father was just sharing with me this week about the fruit of the Spirit – gentleness, which is treating everyone with consideration, respect and compassion. Even though I wanted to do a good job ushering, I was not too gentle, was I?
Eileen : Nope. I’m afraid that came out a little too strong.
Apple : I’m sorry. Hey, thanks for telling me, Eileen.
Eileen : You are welcome. Know something? Sometimes, I know that I should be behaving in a certain way but because of my lousy thoughts and bad moods, I end up behaving terribly.
Apple : I know exactly what you are talking about. The Holy Spirit guiding us in one way, but we let our feelings take us to another.
Eileen : That can be frustrating. But if we choose to listen to the Holy Spirit, He will give us the power to walk in step with Him. We can be in charge of our thoughts, feelings and actions, rather than letting them control us.
Apple : And that’s self-control through the Holy Spirit.
Eileen : Yeah!
Apple : I learned so much about the fruit of the Holy this week and … in some strange way, I’m glad but yet sorry that I plucked that mango branch.
Eileen : (overhears and puzzled) Huh?
Apple : Hey, the Sparklers are going to start the praise and worship now, let’s join them. (everyone on stage moves off, Sparklers take over and sing “The Fruit Of The Spirit” song)

THE END
